Frank Beard, ZZ Top Drummer, Dies at 77

Frank Beard, the longtime drummer of legendary rock band ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77. Beard died on August 17, 2026, while receiving hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family members. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

Beard was an essential part of ZZ Top's signature sound for more than five decades. He joined the band alongside guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill, helping establish the Texas trio's distinctive combination of blues, boogie and hard rock.

A Key Part of ZZ Top's Sound

Although Gibbons and Hill became famous for their long beards, Beard was famously clean-shaven despite his surname. His precise and powerful drumming became a defining part of ZZ Top's music.

The band achieved major commercial success with songs including “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Legs,” “La Grange” and “Tush.” ZZ Top's 1983 album Eliminator became a major breakthrough and helped introduce the band to a huge MTV audience.

More Than 50 Years With ZZ Top

Beard remained closely associated with ZZ Top for roughly six decades. The classic lineup continued for decades until bassist Dusty Hill died in 2021. Elwood Francis later took over bass duties, while Beard continued performing with the group until health issues affected his touring schedule.

ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, recognizing the band's enormous influence on rock music. The group has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and remained a major touring act across generations.

Billy Gibbons Pays Tribute

ZZ Top guitarist and singer Billy Gibbons paid tribute to Beard, describing him as a great friend and collaborator and praising his innovative drumming.

Gibbons also indicated that ZZ Top intends to continue performing, respecting Beard's wishes. Several recent concerts were canceled following his death, while the band planned to resume performances in Austin.
