Trump Declares Victory in Historic Greenland Deal as U.S. Secures ‘Permanent’ Military Rights

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced a major agreement involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland that would give Washington expanded and long-term military and security rights on the strategically important Arctic island.

Trump described the agreement as a historic achievement, saying it gives the United States permanent control over security and other defense needs in Greenland. According to U.S. officials, the agreement would provide permanent access, basing and overflight rights and could allow the United States to establish additional military installations.

The agreement does not transfer ownership or sovereignty of Greenland to the United States. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Danish and Greenlandic officials have emphasized that the agreement recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.

Expanded U.S. Military Presence

The United States already maintains a military installation at Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland. The new agreement would expand Washington's ability to use the island for defense purposes and potentially establish additional military facilities.

U.S. officials say the arrangement has no expiration date and is intended to provide long-term security guarantees in the Arctic. The agreement would also strengthen U.S. access to Greenland's airspace and strategic infrastructure.

China and Russia Face Restrictions

A major part of the agreement concerns the presence of countries considered strategic competitors by Washington.

The proposed arrangement would prevent non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or maintaining troops in Greenland. It would also restrict sensitive investments that could create national-security concerns.

The move reflects the growing strategic importance of the Arctic, where the United States and its allies are increasingly focused on military activity, infrastructure and access to critical resources.

Greenland Remains Under Danish Sovereignty

Despite Trump's declaration of victory, the agreement falls short of his earlier goal of acquiring Greenland for the United States.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen have emphasized that the agreement respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenland's right to self-determination.

The agreement is expected to be formally signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. It will also require parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland before it can fully take effect.

Why Greenland Matters Strategically

Greenland's location between North America and Europe gives it major importance for Arctic defense and surveillance. Its geographic position also makes the island relevant to missile-warning systems, military aviation and broader North Atlantic security.

The new agreement would therefore deepen the United States' long-term military relationship with Greenland while keeping the territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

For now, the agreement represents a significant shift in the security arrangements surrounding Greenland, but its final implementation will depend on the formal signing and required approvals.
