Fan-Favorite Cowboys Rookie Jaishawn Barham Given Major Responsibility in NFL Debut

Dallas Cowboys rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham is set to receive a major opportunity in his first NFL appearance Saturday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

The third-round pick missed Dallas' preseason opener while dealing with a groin injury, but he returned to practice and quickly regained the attention of the Cowboys' coaching staff.

Barham Gets the Green Dot

Barham's first NFL game will involve more than simply lining up on defense.

The rookie is expected to wear the green dot, allowing him to receive defensive communication and help call the Cowboys' defensive plays on the field. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed before the game that Barham would have the opportunity to handle the responsibility.

For a rookie making his professional debut, being trusted with that role represents a significant vote of confidence from Dallas.

A Highly Regarded Rookie

The Cowboys selected Barham with the 92nd overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft after his college career at Michigan. He previously spent two seasons at Maryland before transferring to Michigan.

Barham brings versatility to the Cowboys' defense. He played primarily inside linebacker in college but also spent time rushing from the edge during his final season at Michigan.

Dallas initially planned to develop him primarily at linebacker while taking advantage of his ability to move around the formation.

Strong Training Camp Reviews

Barham quickly became one of the most talked-about rookies during Cowboys training camp.

His physical style, coverage ability and versatility have impressed observers, with some analysts describing him as one of the biggest surprises of Dallas' rookie class.

He has also received praise from head coach Brian Schottenheimer, while the coaching staff has continued to find different ways to use his skill set.

A Big Test Against Arizona

Saturday night's preseason matchup against the Cardinals will provide Barham with his first opportunity to show those skills in an actual NFL game.

The green-dot responsibility makes the debut even more significant. Rather than simply learning the defense from the sideline, Barham will have an active role in communicating the calls to his teammates.
