Josh Allen on an MVP Mission as 5 TDs Lead Bills Past Lions 41-31 in New Highmark Stadium

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Josh Allen made the Buffalo Bills' first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium a memorable one, accounting for five touchdowns as Buffalo defeated the Detroit Lions 41-31 on Thursday night.

Allen threw three touchdown passes and added two rushing touchdowns, finishing the night with 248 passing yards on 20-of-31 passing. He also rushed for 69 yards on 14 carries.

The Bills wasted little time establishing control. Allen scored the first touchdown in the history of the new stadium when he powered into the end zone on a 1-yard run during Buffalo's opening drive.

Buffalo continued to attack throughout the first half. Allen connected with Josh Palmer for a 43-yard touchdown before finding Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid for additional scores.

The Bills entered halftime with a 27-10 advantage, having scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions.

James Cook also played a major role in the victory. The Bills running back rushed for more than 130 yards and added a late touchdown that helped Buffalo put the game out of reach.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff kept the Lions competitive after the break. Goff finished with 327 passing yards and four touchdown passes, while Amon-Ra St. Brown recorded nine receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

The Lions cut Buffalo's lead to 34-24 early in the fourth quarter, but the Bills responded with another scoring drive. Cook's 1-yard touchdown run with 2:50 remaining pushed Buffalo's advantage to 41-24.

Detroit added one more touchdown late, but Buffalo held on for the 41-31 victory.

The result moved the Bills to 2-0 on the 2026 season, while the Lions fell to 1-1. Allen's five-touchdown performance also continued an impressive start to the season after he accounted for four touchdowns in Buffalo's Week 1 victory over Houston.

Allen's performance was particularly significant because it came during the opening of Buffalo's new home. He scored the first touchdown in the stadium and finished the night responsible for five of the Bills' touchdowns.

With Buffalo's offense producing 41 points and Allen continuing to combine passing and rushing production, attention will now turn to whether he can maintain this level of play throughout the 2026 season.

The Bills' next game is against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 27 at Highmark Stadium.
