Country Singer Gabby Mooney Recalls Flatlining in Hospital: “I Didn’t Want to Come Back”

Country music singer Gabby Mooney is sharing the terrifying story of a medical emergency that nearly cost her life.

Mooney, 37, the sister of Dan + Shay singer Shay Mooney, recently revisited her 2023 health crisis during an appearance connected to ABC’s “IMPACT x Nightline.” She recalled suffering severe headaches, experiencing multiple seizures and eventually flatlining in a hospital.

Severe Headache Turned Into a Medical Emergency

Mooney said the ordeal began while she was driving home to Arkansas in 2023. She developed a severe headache that became so intense that she said it was difficult to see the road.

After making it home, her condition worsened. Her mother became concerned and urged her to go to the hospital. Mooney said she subsequently began experiencing seizures.

Because of dangerous tornado weather, regular ambulance services were reportedly unavailable. Her parents arranged for a private ambulance and met the medical team at a Baptist church so she could reach an emergency room more quickly.

Mooney Says She Flatlined

At the hospital, Mooney said doctors attempted to intubate her and she flatlined.

“I died,” she recalled during the interview.

However, Mooney survived the medical emergency. Reports about her recovery say doctors discovered a serious brain condition involving a large cyst and hydrocephalus, and she ultimately required emergency brain surgery.

“I Didn’t Want to Come Back”

Mooney described what she experienced while she was unconscious as a deeply spiritual moment.

She said she felt a sense of peace and believed she experienced the presence of Jesus. She described feeling as though she was being told that it was “not yet” her time.

Mooney said the experience felt so peaceful that she “didn’t want to come back.”

Her account is her personal description of a near-death experience and should not be interpreted as scientific proof of an afterlife.

A Story of Survival

Following the medical crisis, Mooney faced a difficult recovery, including emergency brain surgery and later facial paralysis. She has since continued pursuing her music career and has spoken publicly about how the experience changed her outlook on life.

Mooney also connected her experience to her music, including her song “Safe,” which she debuted in connection with the “Back From the Dead” episode of “IMPACT x Nightline.”
