Fernando Mendoza Throws Pick-6, Struggles in First Half as Raiders Rally Past Texans 22-20

The Las Vegas Raiders overcame a difficult first half from rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza to defeat the Houston Texans 22-20 in their preseason matchup Thursday night.

Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, played the entire first half. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards and threw one interception.

Mendoza Throws an 80-Yard Pick-6

Mendoza's biggest mistake came early in the game.

On his third pass attempt, Houston linebacker Wade Woodaz intercepted the throw and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. The play gave the Texans a 14-0 advantage.

Mendoza attempted to chase Woodaz down but was unable to stop the defensive touchdown.

The rookie later acknowledged that he had plenty to learn from the experience as he adjusts to the speed and difficulty of the NFL.

Raiders Trail 20-3

Houston controlled much of the first half. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud played one series and completed 4 of 6 passes for 27 yards. Running back Woody Marks capped the opening drive with a 20-yard touchdown run.

The Texans eventually built a 20-3 advantage before halftime.

Aidan O'Connell Leads Comeback

The Raiders turned the game around after Mendoza left the contest.

Backup quarterback Aidan O'Connell led a dramatic late comeback, including a 96-yard game-winning drive in the final minutes.

O'Connell completed 15 of 24 passes for 166 yards. His late drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown run with just 14 seconds remaining, putting Las Vegas ahead 22-20.

The Raiders' defense also improved significantly after halftime, helping the team complete the comeback.

Mendoza's Preseason Development Continues

Despite the difficult performance, Mendoza's preseason is still about development. He impressed in his preseason debut against Arizona, but his second outing demonstrated some of the challenges that come with making the transition from college football to the NFL.

The Raiders will have another preseason game to evaluate Mendoza and the rest of their young roster before the regular season begins.

For Mendoza, the pick-6 was a costly mistake, but the experience provides another opportunity to learn as he begins his NFL career.
