Hundreds Missing After Devastating Flash Flood Hits Nepal-Tibet Border

A devastating flash flood has struck the Himalayan region along the Nepal-Tibet border, killing at least 160 people and leaving hundreds missing.

The disaster swept through parts of northern Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Nepalese authorities reported 157 deaths, while Chinese authorities reported three deaths on the Tibetan side.

Hundreds of People Remain Missing

Nepalese authorities reported that 403 people were missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals. Among those reported missing are tourists and pilgrims traveling through the Himalayan region. Chinese authorities separately reported 265 people missing in Tibet's Gyirong County.

Villages and Infrastructure Swept Away

The powerful surge of water and debris caused widespread destruction.

Roads and bridges were washed away, while hydropower facilities and other infrastructure were severely damaged. Some communities were left difficult to reach because the flooding destroyed important transport routes.
