Peter Cullen, Voice of Optimus Prime and Eeyore, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for giving Optimus Prime his iconic voice in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has died at the age of 85.

Cullen died Wednesday, August 26, at his home in Los Angeles, according to his agent. His family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. No cause of death was disclosed.

The Voice Behind Optimus Prime

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series in 1984.

His deep, authoritative voice became inseparable from the heroic Autobot leader. He later returned to the role for numerous Transformers productions, including the live-action movie franchise and 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Cullen's portrayal was influenced by his older brother Larry, a Vietnam War veteran. The advice he received from his brother helped shape Cullen's approach to Optimus Prime as a powerful but compassionate hero.

Fans Also Knew Him as Eeyore

Beyond Transformers, Cullen was beloved for voicing Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and other Winnie the Pooh projects.

The gloomy but lovable donkey became another signature role during Cullen's long career in animation.

A Career Spanning Decades

Cullen's career stretched across animation, television, film and video games.

His other notable credits included KARR in Knight Rider, King Kong in the 1976 film, Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 film Predator. He also worked on numerous animated series, including G.I. Joe, Voltron, The Smurfs and Spider-Man.

Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Children's & Family Emmy Awards in 2023, recognizing his extraordinary contribution to voice acting.

Human Remains Found Miles From Nancy Guthrie’s Home, Sheriff Says No Connection Human remains have been discovered in a desert area about 15 miles from the home of missing Arizona woman Nancy Guthrie, but authorities say there is currently no indication that the remains are connected to her disappearance.
