Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September and is a federal holiday in the United States. The holiday recognizes the social and economic achievements of American workers and the important role they have played in building the nation's strength and prosperity.

What Is Labor Day?

Labor Day has its roots in the American labor movement of the late 19th century. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union.

Over the following years, more states adopted Labor Day as an official holiday. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed legislation making the first Monday of September a national legal holiday.

A Day to Honor American Workers

Today, Labor Day provides an opportunity to recognize workers across many industries, including healthcare, transportation, construction, education, manufacturing, technology, retail, agriculture and public services.

The History Behind the Celebration
